New Companion!

It's a wonderful life in the mission! I have a new companion- Sister Hamblin - from..... ARIZONA! Yayayyy! She's fresh out of the MTC. She's from Eagar and her closest Walmart is Show Low, the closest mall is in Mesa, so that’s fun. We have identical personalities and we have so much fun together! I seriously love her. She's a hard worker and a great teacher. It will be a wonderful 12 weeks, America! I was thinking I was going to leave the area and was totally prepared to do so.... I was thinking this area was dead and I have nothing left to do here- how wrong I was. We did the math- we have 7 current investigators. 5 have accepted baptism and are SO close! All of the lessons we taught this week went so well... like almost TOO well, haha. We are teaching this husband and wife- Melanie and Sergio. they live out of their car..... long story- can't type it out right now. But last lesson I assigned them to read the intro to the Book of Mormon. This lesson they said they read the intro, the testimony of the witnesses and through chapter 5 of 1st Nephi. AND they did the homework assignment at the end of the first lesson. Like, what? It was unreal, I was shocked, hahah. But they accepted baptism so we should be close with them!  The bishop finally ok'd Jason to confirm Delaney- Kim's trying to pick a date.... blek..... it could be a while, haha.

(Later that day...)
So yeah- lessons are going well. My companion worked as a makeup artist in the Fiesta Mall right before she left so we have fun together. We did a lot of yard work this week.. Funny story:  the Bingham's (family we live with) wanted help in their garden. So we were manure-ing it and using one of those tillers to till it in??  Then they had us go through and pick the big rocks out. I picked up what I thought was a rock.... and then realized that this was definitely not a rock...... It was a small skull. Brother Bingham walks over and goes, "oh, there's Lola." WHAT?!  We had dug up the family's deceased dog! I was mortified, of course. And guess what me and Hamblin spent the next hour doing? Picking BLONDE WAVY DOG FUR out of their garden soil. I'M NOT KIDDING. Brother Bingham kept saying, "Sisters- don't tell Kolleen......" hahahha Kolleen... you have to know her. She's like Sister Doane. She is the sweetest, most sensitive lady you've ever met! So we met Lola- the Bingham's dog. Who died in 1991. Isn't that lovely? Then we found out from the neighbors that Lola did not have blonde wavy fur. So there's a possibility that we met another family pet. Me and Hamblin laughed about that for seriously like the next 3 days straight, hahaha. So that's what's new here.

I'm not saying this because I'm stuck up, but the members here LOVE me. like ADORE me. They keep saying, "you are meant to be in this area- we hope you never leave," "you're still here?! and training another one?! how lucky are we!" "we better invite all our friends to hear the lessons now before Sister Shields leaves!" "We just need to add your name to the ward list because you basically live here!" Lovely. I do love this area though! It's the best! I do like feeling appreciated though..... that's nice.  People think I'm way better than I am, that's for sure.

Robyn's baptism looks wonderful! AWESOME for inviting the friend. That's perff. And so does Kayla's prom....lucky duck.  I do love the mission though...

Hope everyone has a great week!

Conference Weekend

Breakfast with members on conference Sunday

Well, we just got the news of transfers tomorrow - I was CONVINCED i was going to leave the area because I've been here 4-1/2 months.... but I'm STAYING! This is really bittersweet..... I had totally prepared myself to go- I feel like I have helped the people we're teaching right now as much as I can- ya know? I even started writing goodbye letters and telling people I was leaving.... plus the work here is really slow guys, hahah - like really slow. I was looking forward to a fresh new start. The good news is- I love this area. I love the Binghams (who we live with) and all the members. I LOVE the Bleaks- I wish i could express to you the huge 180 change they've made over the past couple months. We got to go to the afternoon session of conference with them yesterday and Kim was like, all emotional because she thought I was leaving.... she kept hugging me and insisted on sitting next to me everywhere we went... then last night she said a verbal family prayer (probably the only one she's ever ever said in that house) about how thankful she was that me and Hyden were sent there to help them .... it was sweet. Anyways- it will be nice to stay here with them for a while. I guess that means they still need some foundation building before I can leave! Hyden is going to Layton and she's really upset and nervous, I can tell. She loves this area (I don't blame her) but she will do great. She's at this point where she only likes teaching selective people... (I've been there too). Like old people and being down at the South Davis Hospital KILL her hahah; she hates it. I used to be like that in Layton and then all of the sudden I got here and just love everyone to death. Which really helps missionary work- let me tell you! I hope I trained her well enough! I'm excited to have the opportunity to train again. I LOVE training. mostly because I can take charge..... hahahha, not gonna lie.

Probably 80% of our appointments fell through this week.... it was just lovely. We were supposed to go to Conference on Saturday with our investigator Holly (not the Holly we live with) but she backed out an hour before! Like what is this? And we can't go to Conference unless we have an investigator... but we still got to go to one session though, and that was awesome. Especially sitting next to Kim, who tells everyone around us (loudly of course) "these are our missionaries, my 14 year old daughter is being taught because she's not baptized because we were inactive." Way to lay it out there kim! Not to mention the fact that we almost died driving there in her Lincoln because she's the scariest driver I've ever seen.... and we were almost late because she had to stop at a gas station and pick up literally 15 bottles of Coke... on a Sunday..... and the metal detector went off when she went through security at the conference center so they had to wand her or whatever that's called.... she like, ripped up her skirt to show she didn't have any weapons in her nylons... Like you just have to know her, hahhahah! Her girls were so embarrassed but I was having the time of my life.

Side note on the people we're teaching- Brody and Tara are doing awesome. this past week at the lesson- Brody asked the ward mission leader, Brother Cook, if he could go to priesthood with him next week. Also Brother Cook brought Brody a gift certificate for Mr. Mac so he can go get a suit and he got Tara a gift card for Nordstrom. Like how awesome is that? Brody was crying when he handed that to him... which is weird- Brody's covered in tats and has gages, by the way. That was awesome though. Sio- haven't heard from him. Hope he's alive. Bleaks- REACTIVATED. Baptism in the future \m/ (that's the rock on symbol me and Lauren use all the time hahah). that's all the time I have for updates, sorry; but pray for these people please and have a great week! Wish I could be at Robyn's baptism!

What a week!

Family and Friends,

Oh what a week it's been! Let me start by saying I love my mission. It's so hard and frustrating and I don't feel human anymore and I've learned that when God asks us to sacrifice everything he's not kidding. Romans 1:20 talks about sacrificing your body to the Lord... well that's taken literally when you serve in Salt Lake, haha.

I got to go to the women's conference in Salt Lake with the B girls! Kim didn't come... her anxiety levels can't handle the crowds. But it was fun to be there! Nice job with Battle of the Books Anna- that's awesome! The member who sent mom the picture last night is actually a guy.... his name's Brother Obray- he sells diamonds for a living, just saying. We're teaching his sister-in-law, she's the one who's a lesbian and working on rebaptism. Sorry that sounds rude and judgmental kind of, but that's how to sum up her situation quickly. I love her though! She's the nicest lady ever.

I found out that Evan’s (Amanda's husband) mission president is in my stake and we spend a lot of time with his family so that's cool. Also- Kacie's mission president in Georgia is originally from this stake, how funny is that?

Cool story for the week..... ever since I've been in the area (4 months) we've been teaching a young couple in their 20's with a baby. Their names are Brody and Tara. They are both members of the church but haven't been active since high school. They're kinda rebels.... like they used to be tattoo artists and live kinda wild lives but they're so awesome! We teach them once a week. Since we've been working with them.... they have made absolutely no progress. They don't pray or read their scriptures, much less come to church! They are just totally neutral. In lessons they'll make some comments if we call on them but they just don't seem interested.... so multiple times I've just lost it and said "we want to keep teaching you and help you if we can, but if you don't care or have the desire and you aren't going to do your part, we won't keep coming back" (that's the "drop talk"- I’m pro at that). And every time they're like, "no, we like you coming by, we'll come back to church when we're ready." It's just dumb and frustrating. It's a waste of time but we don't have many people to teach right now so I don't want to drop them. So I’m on my last straw with them this week, right? Out of ideas. We've tried teaching them the investigator lessons, teaching prayer and scripture study, the atonement, the importance of church attendance.... bringing a bunch of different people in the ward to try and fellowship them... like I've tried everything. So I decided we'd just start reading the Book of Mormon with them. We'd given them one months ago, but of course they haven't touched it. So we did a little intro to the Book of Mormon, talked about what it is, who wrote it, what's in it.... read parts of the intro, then we just started chapter 1, each taking turns and reading a verse. We would stop after every couple verses and explain what's going on, etc. We brought a new fellowshipper this time- the ward mission leader. I was kinda worried to do this because he's older and they're young and hip and rebellious and would have nothing in common... but he made some really good comments and Brody especially really liked having him there. We read chapter 1 and I said, "okay is that good for tonight or should we keep going?" Brody goes .... "can I be honest?" (Now's about the time my heart stops beating and I forget to breathe and just break down crying almost.....) "I haven't touched this book since I was 15. I haven't opened the one you gave me months ago. But tonight I'm actually understanding it and it makes sense." WHAT?!  Okay we'll keep going then! We read a little more and stopped in the middle of the chapter so they'd have to keep going. They really liked it, it was by far the best lesson we've ever had with them.  Then I asked Brody to pick someone to say the closing prayer and he said, "sure I can do that" and started saying the prayer... he must have misunderstood me! After a wonderful prayer, he said that's the first time he's prayed out loud in years. I don't know how I never realized it.... but he has NEVER said the prayer in all the time we've been teaching them- not once! It was seriously crazy,,,,,, but wait- it gets better, guys. On the way out the door, he asked the ward mission leader if he had any spare dress pants. WHAT?!  It was too good to be true- I was freaking out. It was seriously the craziest thing ever- I don't think you guys understand.... and that single moment right there gave me a testimony of the Book of Mormon. The end.

Remember Sio? Well..... some drama has come up. So he lives in Salt Lake, right? But his girlfriend who he has a baby with lives in our stake. Her name is Dallas and she lives with her aunt and uncle and their kids. Well a couple weeks ago Sio called and said he couldn't meet with us anymore because something happened with the family.... okay. Well we got permission to go down to Salt Lake to meet with him and heard the whole story...... (this might need to be edited, be warned, it's really messed up). So long story short...... Dallas, Sio's girlfriend, is having an affair with her aunt's husband who she lives with.  Sio tried to tell Dallas's aunt who he's close with, just so she would be aware.... she freaked out and isn't allowing him back in the house. Dallas is moving across the country with Sio's baby; proof she's guilty if you ask me. Anyways.... it's been SO hard on Sio. He was SO CLOSE to baptism and then the perfect Mormon family who was giving him all this support and being a good example to him turns out to have this big dark secret. Like what?? He just cried and cried to us and I had no idea what to say.... I just told him he needs to turn to Heavenly Father and everything will work out okay. I told him he NEEDS the Holy Ghost in his life now more than ever. Please keep him in your prayers, and Dallas's family. I NEVER in 50 billion years would have seen that coming......... they are seriously perfect. It's sad though because this is Dallas's aunt's second marriage- she's such a sweetheart and her first husband was really abusive.... it's just sad.

We are down to 3 investigators and 2 less active families to teach. That is terrible, hahahhaha!  I feel like a failure and feel like God won't give us more people to teach until I take care of the ones he's already given me.... I feel like I work so hard, I try to be obedient and do the right things but it's never good enough. I know it's not my fault but it's HARD! The good news is- the Bleaks are reactivated and going to all of church now. That is a MIRACLE.  Hopefully good things will start to happen. We're begging our investigators to go to Conference with us..... we'll see. It breaks my heart to think I might be getting transferred out of the area- honestly just because I'm going to miss Holly Bingham so much! She's seriously my best friend and it's been SO fun to live with her!

Have a good week, make good choices, keep the law of chastity, read the Book of Mormon, eat healthy. Love you all!

Happy Birthday to me!

Celebrating my birthday with the B family

Family -
My birthday was good- the B's went above and beyond (what else is new?).  Kim was sick so the Bingham's (family we live with) took us out to eat- it was nice of them. I love the Bingham's! An elder in my district who's from Germany/England got me protein powder for my birthday- I was so excited! All the sisters in the district were jealous because they all love him... haha! Take that! Just kidding. Jamison's doing well in case you were wondering.

We had our youth fireside last night... SO good. We use a member's home and have it opened to anyone in the stake who wants to come. Our first one (last month) didn't have such a great turn out but this one was much better! Lots of young men preparing to serve missions came and brought friends with them. I was struggling to pick a topic to teach here- because there is a big range... nonmembers who know nothing about the church, to youth preparing to serve missions. Like what do you tell these kids that they'll actually kind of care about ya know???  Haha all these college kids and what not... like when I was that age I didn’t care about anything except shopping and the gym and boys (like you are well aware of hahah). After lots of prayer- we decided on The Restoration lesson. We cut the pictures from the pamphlet and gave a picture to small groups of about 3 youth. We had them discuss how these pictures could be applied to them personally- then they shared their thoughts with the group. They all had really good, heartfelt answers! After that we explained that all of those pictures came from the restoration pamphlet, therefore they just proved that the gospel and the message of the restoration can be applied directly to everyone- specifically youth. I thought this worked out wonderfully- not gonna lie, hahahha. After that we had everyone write down a gospel or mission related question on a slip of paper and put them in a bowl. We went through them one at a time, first opening answers up to youth to give them a chance to answer. Some of the questions were very personal and heartfelt so it worked very well that they were all answered unanimously. It was so good... and we didn't just have the weird super mormon kids come- ya know?!  There were normal people there- it was awesome!

Did I tell you about the meeting with the mission department and how they want our lessons taught in 7 minutes now? Super short, sweet, simple, to the point. We are supposed to use the pamphlets and highlights points on each page. The point is for them to get a "taste" of it- then they can read the whole pamphlet on their own and learn by themselves and by the Holy Ghost. Example: "what do you think of when you see this picture of Christ?" "How does this picture make you feel?" "Yes, we can feel peaceful and loved just like the lamb Jesus is holding in this picture by living the gospel," etc. so basically- questions followed by a sentence summary/testimony. 7 minutes of teaching time! Visits are 30 minutes long so the rest can be talking/questions. Then after the first lesson- they are supposed to say the closing prayer, ask if these things are true and they are supposed to be the ones to break the silence after the prayer with how they feel. Sometimes we get so excited that they said a prayer that right after “amen” we're like, "yay that was so good!" Spirit murder. HAHA I'm funny. Anyways so they break the silence after the prayer, then if it's going good and we feel impressed to, we invite to be baptized. then we pull up mormon.org on their computer so if they have any questions or want to learn more- it's up and ready to go.  Lesson 2 we are supposed to introduce the Book of Mormon to them.  Read parts of the intro and start chapter 1.  Then we challenge them to keep reading! Our mission president was talking the other day about how the Book of Mormon is set up perfectly for investigator's conversions.... think about it - it starts with the prophets commanding the people of Jerusalem to repent or they will be destroyed. Lehi wants to know what to do- he prays and receives an answer. He's commanded to take his family and leave their lives behind for a better life. Nephi wants to know for himself- so he prays about it and gets an answer too.  Then the tree of life is chapter 8- that's kind of like the eternal perspective.... it's just set up perfectly! Then lesson 3 we teach the plan of salvation. I really like the way it's set up.

I can't remember if I told you, but the mission is starting to call one senior full-time couple from each stake to assist the missionaries. The couple called for our stake is like..... HARDCORE. They write scripts for all the lessons they have to teach and stress about them.  I'm like, I have to give talks in 3 different sacrament meetings today, I have a couple scriptures written down that I want to use and that's it... hahhah, I'm pro at winging it- my companion hates it because she's a stresser too!

I am so sick of people cancelling lessons..... like, can you just not? We take members out with us every night whether we have lessons or not! So if they get cancelled, we knock doors.... and sometimes that's just exhausting.

We did a lot of service this week. I colored some hair for some less actives we're working with and also learned how to refinish hard wood floors! That was fun. Transfers are a week from tomorrow........ thank goodness.... I mean- what? I want so badly to stay in this area- especially with these youth firesides happening now!

Thank you all for the birthday presents- that was the best!

Have a good week!

A super quick update ...

Family -

I literally have 2 seconds to write this so here you go...

Last night our zone had a missionary birthday party because like 5 people have birthdays this week. That was fun! Then we got back to the house and found out our basement has a plumbing issue and everything was all flooded.... so I had to go use the B's shower this morning. Anyways they are a lifesaver. Side note on them - Jason came to church again this week and paid his tithing! Yay! Kim was out of town this weekend so she couldn't make it.

The top secret meeting I went to on Wednesday was with the mission department. They have changed the way we're supposed to teach all the lessons! Basically they want it all super short and sweet and basic now, We teach with the pamplets and each lesson has to be 7 minutes of teaching. So SUPER short and sweet. I really like it though... we got 2 new investigators this week- a husband and wife.  Taught them the first lesson with this method and it went so well! No glazed over looks like we usually get with the first lesson... yay!

Have to go- sorry, doing a bunch of hair today.. which is a good and bad thing.

Have a good week!

PS Here are some pics of some visual aids I made to help teach the lessons ...

Still March ...

Family and Friends -

This week..... on Tuesday we had a mission meeting with Elder Ballard and Elder Marriott of the 70. It was very cool! I know this is bad but I love missionary meetings mostly because I get to dress up and get ready like a normal human being and be around other missionaries, not just my companion...... sorry that's terrible but it's the truth. I'm praying for patience and long suffering right now- even though I know things could be about 50 times worse and I'm grateful they're not! It's still just really hard to be with the same person 24/7..... much less a girl. Especially a girl who I have nothing in common with. Literally nothing. But it's okay! I'm learning to expand my my friendship circle.

Anyways- Sister H (my trainer from Layton) is now in my district and is the STL so I got to go on exchanges with her this week! Technically.... she's supposed to go with the junior comp... but she really wanted to go with me so we made an exception, haha. I'm so glad she did, too- I needed that break! We had so much fun together and I realized how lucky I was to have her! Plus she likes clothes- can I just say I never realized there are girls who don't like clothes? We worked so hard that day! We did yard work for a nonmember we are trying to teach. As we were working the yard, of course we tried to direct conversation towards the gospel. We ended up teaching her the first lesson- right there in her front yard! It was awesome! We haven't set up another lesson yet but the door has been opened. Service work opens so many doors! Also that day- we found a new investigator down at South Davis Hospital. It was an awesome day! We need investigators SO badly... we technically only have 1 or 2.

Wednesday I have been asked to attend a top secret, 9 hour leadership meeting..... I was told to find someone for my comp to go with because she's not invited. I have no idea what that's about- we'll see!

So Delaney B was supposed to get baptized on my birthday or sometime close to that.... But the bishop said her dad won't be ready by then. Kim and Jason didn't make it to church yesterday :( they got caught up painting their basement or something. Jason also needs to attend more than just sacrament meeting to get worthy so it could be a while. That's a bummer..... Btw, Bountiful's basketball team won championships and I am hearing SO MUCH about Jordan B... (Nathan's brother). Kim and Emmy (15 year old) are out of town this week and Kim has asked us to stop in on Delaney and help her with homework and make sure she's eating and stuff because she'll basically be home alone..... Hopefully we can have some good 1 on 1 church conversations with her.

Saturday I spent ALL DAY doing hair for service. it was for a less active family we're working with. They have so many different people living in this tiny house and are really struggling with money so it was neat.... but holy cow, was I exhausted. I did 5 hours straight- 4 little girl haircuts, 3 mom haircuts, 1 set of highlights and 2 little boy haircuts. Lets just say I'm out of practice! It was fun though. I cut the mission president's wife's hair last Monday and that was fun... she's quite picky but I think she likes it? Also President Hansen told me I can't cut elder's hair anymore- even if it's in a church with a bunch of other sisters. I'm kind of relieved, I don't like cutting nasty sweaty boy hair anyways!

Holly is going through her drug detox this week... I think she's doing okay. She's been really hard to get ahold of! We can't lose her though, she's one of our few investigators! Sio is now being taught by us and the elders in his area where he lives in SLC. Since he has 2 sets of full time missionaries now...... he HAS to get baptized soon, am I right? Fingers crossed! We're still trying to figure out what's holding him back.... Tina talked to her bishop and had an interview with him. There's some drama with her "partner" not being supportive.... and she has to have an interview with a gen authority so she doesn't have a set baptism date. Hopefully that happens soon!

Can't remember if I told you this but our mission is starting to call a full time senior couple in each stake. So they live in the stake, but are called to our mission. I'm so excited to use them! Also they have more lenient rules so they can leave the area and go visit our investigators in other areas like Tina and Sio, and drive people in their cars! We aren't allowed to drive anyone and that sometimes causes major issues..... sometimes we are okay'd to drive Delaney because she's not old enough to drive herself places... but that's it!

I'm learning so much about the scriptures and whatnot- I don't even think you guys understand.... I love being a missionary and I love helping people find the gospel and be happy. A mission is definitely NOT the best 18 months of my life.... but the best 18 months FOR my life. I'm not going to lie- somehow everyday is still miserable and a major struggle, haha. Like I have to pray 50 times a day just to get through the day.

So I'm following up on the challenge I gave everyone in December.... how are the missionary efforts going guys?! Everyone who gets this email better be working on someone!!
Thank you for being awesome, have a wonderful week!

It's March!

Family,

What a week this has been! Guess who came to church the second week in a row? Kim and Jason B. Again- I was shocked. Especially because Kim was up all night sick and normally she would use that as an excuse. They only came to sacrament meeting but I'll take what I can get. The best part is- I think they're really going for themselves, not for us. We didn't even have to remind them this week- they just came! And brought Chandler, their daughter who's my age and hasn't been to church in years and years. She's the one I'm trying to hook up with the YSA elders (not actually hook up.... by that I mean hand her over to them so they can try to get her active, haha. But I mean, if she likes them, that will work too.... one's from Germany/England and has an accent so that def helps the situation). It was just wonderful. Kim wants to baptize Delaney on my birthday weekend- that week will be a big deal with them. Kim's planning a HUGE party and getting me a shirt that says "Agent Shields." That's what she calls me- still don't know why....... oh well. Anyways- good things going on in that house.

We were able to have a lot of investigator lessons this week- normally we only have 3 or so a week.... this week we had 6! Don't know how that happened because we're only teaching 3 nonmembers....Sio- our Polynesian investigator- is really struggling. We taught him yesterday and he was just being weird and quiet and distant. At the end of the lesson we asked if we could do the same time next week and he didn't answer and looked at the ground.... he KNOWS the church is true and wants to get baptized; I think Satan's just working really hard on him. He lives in Rose Park and so I talked to the Elders down there and they're going to start daily visiting him... Prayers are needed for him please!

I don't know if I've ever told you about Tina before... She served a mission years ago and has such a strong testimony and knowledge of the gospel. She struggles with same gender attraction and lived with a girl for the past 10 years and was excommunicated. We're teaching her the lessons to help her get rebaptized. She's seriously so wonderful I can't even explain it to you..... She is so strong and wonderful, she doesn't even realize it. She has really low self esteem and struggles with bad depression.... It breaks my heart. My comp doesn't like teaching her and used to kind of laugh at the situation. Like yes- that is an interesting situation but I LOVE HER. I think the mission has really helped me see people the way Heavenly Father sees them.... I just want to throw my arms around her and tell her everything's going to be okay (of course I can't though- she keeps things really formal and all we do is shake hands). She's going through some of the hardest things you could possibly imagine..... we've been teaching her for 2 months and she finally got up the courage to call her bishop to get a baptism interview. She has to go in front of a church council and meet with a general authority and she's scared to death. I asked her the other day what made her decide to come back. She said she misses the Holy Ghost in her life and needs it. I try to keep her story on the DL (that means down low, Mother) for obvious reasons. But she's such an example of strength, some people need to hear it. I told Kim B and she cried and cried and cried..... HAHA.

We are teaching a girl named Holly who's 30 or so (not Holly that we live with) and she accepted baptism this week! She's going through drug rehab so it will have to be far in the future but she still accepted! Keep her in your prayers as well plzzz.  Sister H (my trainer) is now the STL over my zone! I get to go on exchanges with her tomorrow and I cannot wait. I LOVE her.

Mission life is hard, I'm constantly worried I'm being too pushy or not pushy enough or not working hard enough or not teaching the right lesson to the right person... giving my trainee too much responsibility, not enough responsibility, not showing her how to teach right. Finding new people to teach, getting people to church every week, nagging people to keep commitments, being loving but not TOO loving so they're dependent on you..... hard stuff.

Did I tell you the basement we live in has a hair room? That's fun. I did my comp's cut and color last week! Today Sister Hansen asked if I'd drive down to the mission home to cut her hair....... that should be fun.

Sounds like the temple dedication was awesome, hope everyone has a good week!

PS Amanda May is serving her 3 months proselyting right now .... she's in Bakersville California! It's very inconvient for me though- I now have no temple square hook ups.
